‘Let’s Read’ harvest project. 2007
For a number of years now our church, Hutton and Shenfield Union Church, has helped in education projects in Ghana – particularly in primary schools in the rural Upper East region of the country.
One of our church leaders, Lyn Corderoy, who was a teacher at Willowbrook Primary School, and is now headteacher of the Grange Primary School in Wickford, has been to Ghana on a number of occasions, with the organisation ‘Link Community Development’, and has helped us grow links with these schools and develop resources for teachers and pupils to use.
Our harvest project last year, ‘Harvest for the Minds’, helped with providing reading resources for primary school classes, and we were delighted that with help from Herington House School we were able to raise over £3,500.
This year we want to continue with this project by developing it for children at the lower end of the primary school age range, specifically for nursery and foundation classes. We will be funding the development and production of ‘Let’s Read’ picture pack resources for children just beginning school. These packs will consist of laminated picture cards to help children as they begin to learn to read. A pack costs £20 for each class.
The primary schools that we are helping are in one of the poorest regions in Ghana, with classes which are extremely large and have very few resources. Link Community Development, our partner charity in this project, are involved in school projects throughout Africa, with the aim of improving schools and the quality of education they deliver so that children have a chance to flourish and fulfil their potential.
Link believes that education is a basic human right and is fundamental in breaking the cycle of poverty. Link is involved not only in helping to produce resources to be used in the classrooms, but also in giving appropriate training to teachers to help them in their work.
If you would like to help us in our ‘Let’s Read’ harvest project this year, please make cheques payable to ‘Link Community Development’ and put ‘Let’s Read’ on the back of the cheque. If you are willing to gift aid your donation please note that on the back of the cheque as well, together with your name and address.
